Aromatic prickly shrub, tree or woody climber to 6m with separate male & female flowers, sometimes perfect, axillary corymbs or panicles to 20mm long of greenish-yellow flowers to 1.5mm, 6-8 sepals & petals villous on back 1.5mm long, staminate floers 3mm long with 8 green or yellowish-green segments to 2mm long, carpellate flowers to 2mm long, segments as above, perfect flowers to 3mm long, prickly branchlets, fruit follicles purplish-red to 4mm diameter, 3mm long glabrous imparipinnate leaves to 250mm long, trifoliolate-6 pairs of leaflets, hairy or glabrous above & hairy on veins beneath to 120mm x 45mm, glabrescent stems with spines
