Large scandent, sprawling or erect pubescent shrub or woody climber to 17m with glabrescent young twigs & reddish tomentose branchlets. Hirsute leaves or glabrous above & tomentose beneath to 300mm x 150mm. Solitary or leaf-opposed cymes of 120mm diameter with basal bract 30mm long & medial bract 20m long, dark red or purple fragrant flowers with yellow centre aging purplish to 110mm x 70mm, 3 sepals yellowish or brownish-green to 25mm x 20mm, 6 fleshy red, white or yellow petals aging purplish to 40mm long. Hirsute orange fruit to 60mm x 15mm & longitudinally ridged.
