Liana or stout coarse scandent shrub to 30m with stout recurved spines. Glabrous simple leaves to 300mm diameter. Axillary & terminal racemes to 25mm diameter of many-flowered spherical umbels of small white, green, blackish or yellow turning red very fragrant flowers 11mm long, lower peduncles converted to hooked spines pubescent calyx to 5mm long with 4-6 lobes, white pilose corolla 11mm long with 4-6 lobes & red blotches. Brown fruit, a glabrate capsule 40mm x 5mm.
