Prostrate or sometimes climbing tuberous herb, brightly coloured white, yellow, yellow-red, pink, reddish or purple-pink root tubers to 80mm long, mucronulate leaves to 200mm wide. Small tubers develped in leaf axles. Terminal racemes with bractlets, of greenish-yellow to reddish flowers, alternate leaves
