Robust pubescent or glabrous herbaceous bifid or trifid-tendril annual vine or creeper with 6 or 7 angled grooved stems, palmate 5-7 lobed leaves to 120mm diameter villous scabrous above, villous on nerves beneath. Male racemes to 200mm with red bracts to 30mm long, 16mm red or pale red flowers, deep purple-red with white or pink, corolla 50mm long, calyx tube to 50mm or more with 5 lobes to 15mm long, female flowers solitary to 30mm long with 1-3 bracts, purple flowers to 30mm, red-veined petals, calyx to 20mm with lobes to 7mm, smooth or slightly pubescent red fruit to 100mm x 80mm
