Spiny herbaceous or woody high-climbing vine to 10m, scandent tree or shrub, pilose stems with thorns to 3mm x 1.5mm. Glabrate to hairy binate leaves to 150mm x 70mm with recurved prickles on nerves, scattered hairy stellate down above, sparsely pubescent with stellate pili beneath. Villous prickly lateral or extra-axillary racemes, 5-20 flowered, of 25mm diameter white or blue flowers, corolla tomentose outside, tomentose calyx to 4mm long with 5 teeth 1.5mm long, prickly, white or violet corolla, tube to 15mm long & lobes to 12mm long. Orange or red glabrous fruit to 9mm diameter. Twiner with recurved thorns, 20mm diameter purple flowers
