Perennial woody herb or shrub with erect or scrambling stems to 2.4m, disagreeably aromatic. Leaves to 90mm x 40mm with crenate to serrate margins. Terminal corymbs with 1-4 hairy bracts to 6mm long. 8-14 dull purple phyllaries to 10mm long. 12-14 violet, pale purple or mauve ray florets, glabrous corolla tube to 4.5mm long, rays to 14mm x 4.5mm. Purple to dark red disc florets, corolla to 8mm long with lobes 1mm long. Ribbed hairy achenes to 3.5mm long with pappus to 8mm long.
