Perennial erect or scandent rhizomatous herb with serrate scabrid culms, scabrid leaves to 800mm x 11mm with cutting edges. Terminal panicles to 80mm long, spikelets to 5mm long. Grey to blackish or white sometimes with purple tinge achenes to 2.6mm long, nut to 2.5mm diameter.
