Evergreen prickly-stemmed shrub in colder climates, pubescent weakly climbing subshrub in warmer areas with sparse recurved thorns, tomentose stems, pinnately trifoliate sometimes 5-foliolate leaves, leaflet glabrous or pilose above, white-tomentose beneath to 50mm x 50mm. Solitary axillary or terminal corymbs or short racemes to 80mm of 50mm wide pink to purple-red flowers 10mm across, tomentose calyx & sepals, calyx to 8mm long, pink or purpel glabrous petals 6mm x 4mm, bright-red nearly glabrous aggregate fruits to 15mm diameter
