Large stout solitary or clustering rattan climbing palm to 50m with spines, leaf to 7m long including terminal thorny extension to 3m long, green leaf sheath armed with combs of brown spines, leaflets to about 60 each side terminating in a tendril, pendulous terminal spikes of flowers to 2.4m long, male & female similar to 1.1m, with brown sheaths enclosing flowers, male calyx 3mm high, corolla with 3 lobes, female calyx 8mm x 8mm & red-tomentose, with 3 lobes, corolla with 3 lobes, densely villous fruit 28mm diameter cvered in rows of red-brown scales
