Large herbaceous perennial dioecious tuberous-rooted simple-tendril climber, strong-growing, glabrous or hairy stems. Coriaceous 3-5 lobed denticulate palmate mucronate cordate glabrous leaves to 200mm diameter or hairy on nerve, tendrils to 120mm longs. Axillary male flowers 30mm long solitary or in raceme, bract 30 x 38mm, flowers 70mm long white tinged yellow with black spots at base, pubescent outside & more or less inside, pilose 5-lobed calyx to 16mm long, calyx lobes 13mm x 7mm, white tinged yellow corolla with 5 petals to 60mm x 25mm, female flowers solitary, 20-60mm yellow flowers. 200mm bright orange-red to reddish-purple, warty or spiny fruits, spines 3mm long.
