Usually a shrub or small tree, dioecious, sometimes semi-scandent, leaves to 120mm x 40mm of two principal forms, first form is glabrous with an entire margin, second form has dentate margins in upper part & is hairy, male inflorescence lateral or terminal panicles to 80mm long with small bracts, male flowers have 8 tepals, 4 outer tepals hairy, 4 inner tepals glabrous, female flowers lateral or terminal in few-flowered racemes to 40mm long, flowers with 4 tepals, glabrous orange to reddish-blackdrupe to 9mm x 5mm, yellowish-green flowers
