Herbaceous annual or short-lived perennial hirsute twiner with hairy stems. 1-5 lobed leaves hirsute above to 150mm long, stiffly hirsute beneath. Axillary inflorescences of solitary or axillary dichasias with bracts to 10mm, of 80mm blue turning reddish purple flowers with white tube or sometimes white flowers, corolla to least 75mm long x 50mm, with tube 70mm, 5-lobed limb 30mm across, villous outside, hirsute sepals 30mm long hispid at base with yellow bristles. Fruit a yellowish glabrous capsule to 12mm diameter surrounded by persistent sepals

Has naturalised in some areas. Rampant, now pantropical

Seeds have medicinal uses. Edible root. Plant extract used against headlice.
