Epiphytic woody vine with aerial roots, brown spines to 4mm long, 3-angled stems, areoles with 1-3 spines to 4mm long. Solitary axillary or terminal nocturnal white flowers to 300mm long, tepals turning yellowish when mature, outer tepals green. 120mm x 70mm red or pink-purple fruit covered in large foliaceous scales.

Flower buds used as vegetable, fruit edible.
