Scrambling or prostrate annual prickly herbaceous vine with quadrangular stems & branches, stiff hairs all over plant. 6-9 leaves to 30mm long in a whorl, mucronulate leaves scabrous or prickly on margins. Terminal or axillary cymes or subpanicles of 1-3 yellowish-green or white flowers to 5mm diameter, hairy calyx tube to 0.74mm long, 4 petals 0.75mm long. bristly fruit 5.5mm diameter. Bristly fruit to 3mm x 6mm diameter, hooked bristles, olive-green or purplish.

Juice of plant has medicinal uses. Seeds have been used as a coffee substitute, tea can be made from the dried plant, used as a medicine for geese, roots produce a red dye
