High-climbing twining armed palm with hook-like blackish-brown spines to 40mm long to 5-8-pronged. Leaves with 7-8 pairs of segments, segments to 300mm x 40mm. Fragrant yellow flowers, 3-denticulate calyx. Green fruit a drupe 25mm x 15mm becoming orange-yellow then orange-red, spadix to 400mm long 20mm long yellow to red fruit with sweet yellow pulp.
