Erect shrub, small tree or climber with unpleasant smell. Lenticellate branches. Serrate or denticulate leaves to 250mm+ x 250mm, glabrate above & puberulent beneath. Supra-axillary & terminal panicles to 300mm x 300mm made up of many-flowered cymes to 80mm wide with bracts to 40mm x 15mm & bractlets to 20mm x 25mm, ill-smelling or odourless flowers, 4-parted calyx with bright red lobes to 17mm x 7mm, deep red or scarlet corolla to 30mm long with tube to 20mm x 2mm, 5 lobes to 12mm x 3mm. Black edible drupe enclosed by persistent calyx whose lobes finally become reflexed.
