Spiny glabrous evergreen climber to 33m or woody shrub, spines to 15mm long, hollow branches often inhabited by ants. Coriaceous glabrous leaves to 250mm x 93mm, sometimes blotched. Terminal or supra-axillary many-flowered cymes to 240mm wide with bracts. Fragrant or odourless depending on time of day white to slightly purple flowers, stamens red, red or purple calyx 20m long with 5 lobes, white or yellowish to purple corolla with tube 100mm long & 5 lobes 40mm wide. Fruit maturing black
