Shrub, small tree or woody spiny climber to 5m with spines to 50mm. Mucronate glabrous leaves to 60mm x 35mm. Terminal & axillary corymbs or cymes of white or pale rose 20mm fragrant flowers, 5-lobed calyx to 2.5mm, corolla tube to 20mm, lobes to 10mm x 3mm. Fruit reddish-purple or black berry to 25mm x 20mm.

Cultivated for edible fruit, used for fencing, medicinal uses
