Spiny climbing clustering rattan palm to 25m. Leaf sheath with black spines to 40mm, to 100mm around mouth. Spiny leaves to 2m long with segments to 490mm x 22mm, up to 60 per side. Male inflorescence to 4m with spines to 20mm, rachillae to 20mm long with 3-5 flowers each side, flowers 3mm long, calyx 2mm long. Female inflorescence a spadix to 8m, rachillae to 150mm long with up to 22 flowers per side, greenish-white flowers, female flower 3mm long. Fruit 14mm x 8mm.
