Robust clustering climbing rattan palm to 40m. Spiny leaf sheaths to 30mm diameter, spines to 50mm long. Leaves to 6m long armed with spines to 20mm long both surfaces, cirrus to 2m long armed with grapnel-like spines. 70 leaflets per side, papery leaflets to 550mm x 30mm & armed with reddish short bristles beneath & bristles on margins. Male pendulous inflorescence to 850mm long with bracts & densely armed with spines to 20mm long, bracts become coriaceous after flowering, male flower to 5mm long. Pendulous female inflorescence to 650mm long with leathery bracts to 250mm x 30mm. Pendulous infructescence to 600mm long armed with robust spines, fruits covered with 7 vertical rows of encrusted scales, fruits 150mm x 150mm
