Thicket-forming rattan palm with erect or sometimes scandent stems to 5m. Stem sheaths to 20mm diameter, scurfy leaf sheaths armed with black spines to 40mm long, leaves to 4m long with or without tendril. 80 bristly leaflets per side, to 500mm x 28mm with spines. Spadix to 350mm long, beaked female spadix 30mm long with spines, female flowers to 6mm long, male flowers 5mm long. 22mm x 20mm yellow-brown fruit with mucronate beak.
