Climbing thicket-forming feather-palm with erect or sometimes scandent stem to 4m. Rusty furfuraceous leaf sheaths with black spines to 40mm long, leaves to 4m long, 80-100 bristly leaflets per side to 400mm x 15mm. Spadix 300mm long with spines, female spadix to 200mm long, female flowers 5mm long, male spadix a rusty furfuraceous panicle. Creamy brown flowers with sickly scent. Yellowish to light brown beaked fruit to 200mm x 20mm.
