Climbing or erect palm to 6m. Leaf sheaths armed with large black triangular spines, leaves to 5m, leaflets to 1m x 55mm whitish beneath with spiny margins. Inflorescence to 200mm long with bracts to 300mm long, spadix armed with needle-like black spines. Fruit to 22mm x 15mm with reddish-brown scales.
