Spiny clustering climbing rattan to 5m, spines to 25mm long. Leaf sheaths covered in black spines to 25mm long, leaves to 2m with 30mm spines on both surfaces & cirrus to 400mm long armed with spines, leaflets to 260mm x 20mm with scattered reddish bristles on main nerve beneath. Pendulous spiny inflorescence to 200mm long with papery bracts & up to 6 rachillae. Fruit to 22mm x 18mm covered in red-brown scales.

Used for weaving. Cane used for handcrafts
