Perennial herb or shrub usually erect but sometimes becoming scandent to 3m. Young growth rarely pubescent, usually glabrous, often reddish or purple. Pinnatisect serrate glabrous or sparsely pubescent leaves to 140mm x 90mm. Corymbose cymes with 5 bracts to 7mm long, pale orange phyllaries, 8 ray florets to 2mm long, disc florets to 6.5mm long. Black achenes to 11.5mm long with pappus to 4mm long.
