Cauliflorous woody dioecious tree to 15m, shrub, herb or twining liana with pubescent twigs. Glabrous coriaceous leaves to 250mm x 150mm. Axillary male panicles, female flowers in long lax spikes, creamy-green flowers. Female flowers with 4-lobed calyx. Cauliflorous 8mm wide red fruit with persistent style.
Stems used for hoe-shafts, house construction, leaves used for colouring, leaves, stems & roots have medicinal uses
