Liana with huge tuberous trunk to 1m across topped by pencil-thin clambering grey twigs to 8m long, normally leafless armed with long stout thorns to 80mm. Leaves produced in rainy season, entire or 3-lobed to 7mm x 9mm. Axillary or terminal inflorescence of 1-5 flowers in male, 1-3 flowers in female, star-like shining red odorous flowers, male flowers including stipe to 35mm long, sepals 9mm long, petals 7.5mm long. Female flowers including stipe to 12mm lomg, sepals to 8mm, petals to 3mm. Coriaceous fruit to 28mm x 20mm.
