Small to high-climbing deciduous shrub to 10m with dark red-brown glabrescent branches. Toothed spinulose glabrous leaves to 150mm x 75mm nearly glabrous above puberulous on veins beneath. 1- 3-flowered axillary cymes with minute bracts of 12mm pink or reddish flower, staminate flowers in cymes pistillate flowers usually solitary, 5 glabrous sepals 6mm x 3mm with ciliate margins, 5 petals to 8mm x 6mm. Glabrous lenticellate fruit grey-green to blackish to 22mm x 20mm.
